Redstone’s fresh start and Clinical Solutions enjoys a better year

Beleagured ICT provider Redstone has announced a proposed £8.5m equity fund raising, alongside conversion of existing £4.5m loan notes, extended and softer banking facilities and a settlement of the £2.5m Eckoh liability for £1.5m. In addition, Ian Smith and Tony Weaver, who recently joined as NEDs, will become Chairman and CEO respectively.  By removing legacy issues and significantly strengthening the balance sheet and management, Redstone’s prospects have changed overnight, and the new shareholders should make a decent return if the new management deliver. Premium subscribers can read our analysis of the deal following a conversation with new CEO Tony Weaver this morning.

International expansion remains the key for Clinical Solutions

Clinical decision support software vendor Clinical Solutions, which is backed by Balderton and Bridgepoint, has issued its accounts for the year to December 2009. Having had a weaker year in 2008 (Premium Plus subscribers see here for our coverage), the company bounced back in 2009 with higher revenues and profits. Revenues for the year increased 9.6% to £28.2m and adjusted EBTIDA was ahead 11.8% to £8.9m.

This is a better set of results from Clinical Solutions after the disappointments of 2008 but the company still seems to be struggling to get momentum into its international development strategy. We examine the figures and the company’s strategic direction in more detail in Newswire Plus.

Intel / McAfee deal holds mixed blessings for UK security software vendors

We have written several times over the last couple of years about the security software sector and have how we believe it to be a long running M&A hotspot. Premium subscribers can read our most recent missive on the subject here. However, even coming at the subject with this clear view, we were not expecting anything as fundamental as Intel’s bid for McAfee last week. Whilst the deal has drawn mixed comment from observers and investors, we see a compelling rationale for the deal.

However, whilst this theorising about Intel’s rationale is all very interesting, what is of more interest to us is what impact this transaction will have on the UK based security software vendors under our coverage. Premium subscribers can read our full analysis here.
