More fun with femtocells and we ask - will US Telcos ever learn?
The latest telecoms M&A rumours involving AT&T buying Cable & Wireless Worldwide (CWW) have all the hallmarks of silly season rumour designed to drive share trading volumes in otherwise quiet times (as with similar rumours regarding Autonomy), but also got us thinking about successful M&A between US and UK/European telcos. Sadly we couldn’t think of any. Read our full rant in Newswire Plus.
ip.access raises £10.2m; but at a reduced valuation
We initiate coverage on ip.access, another UK pioneer in femtocells alongside PicoChip and Ubiquisys. Like these two, ip.access has just raised significant new funding (£10.2m in May 2010 plus £2.8m to come) and enjoys a blue chip list of strategic and financial investors. Unlike the other two, ip.access has an existing business as a developer of mobile picocells, and therefore enjoys higher revenues but also equally eye-watering losses. Financial pressures are evident in the company having to renegotiate debt repayments and undertaking the most recent funding at a reduced valuation. Datatec builds African presence for Westcon with Comztek purchase
Infrastructure services player Datatec was back on the acquisition trail yesterday as it announced the purchase of South African IT and networking products distributor Comztek for ZAR97m (£8.8m) in cash and shares. Based in South Africa, but with a presence across Africa, Comztek will be combined with Datatec’s distribution subsidiary Westcon to boost its African presence.
Datatec shares have more than trebled over the last 18 months as the company has emerged from recession. Our recent conversations with CEO Jens Montanana had suggested that Datatec would return to the acquisition trail as market conditions recovered with the emphasis on emerging markets so we would expect more acquisition like this going forward from Datatec.
OFT not to refer Idox’s Grantfinder acquisition
Supplier of software and services to local authorities Idox announced yesterday that the OFT has decided not to refer its acquisition of Grantfinder to the Competition Commission. Premium Plus subscribers can read our previous thoughts on the matter here. Whilst it would not have been a major disaster for Idox to have this bolt-on acquisition referred, it is clearly very good news that the company is now able to get on with generating a return for shareholders from the acquisition.
