Microsoft’s record quarter and musings on mVOIP
Technology bellwether Microsoft started the fiscal year on a strong note with its Q1 2011 results beating market expectations. Revenue jumped 25% to $16.2bn, with growth witnessed across all the segments. Driven by strong demand for Windows 7 and Office 2010, both windows and business segment posted strong revenue growth of 66.1% and 13.6% to $4.8bn and $5.1bn respectively. See Newswire Plus for more.
Mobile Weekly - O2 UK and Skype/Nimbuzz mVOIP developments
A couple of stories have caught our eye this week that show the continuing evolution and maturity of low cost mobile international calling service (or mVOIP generically); O2 UK launching mVOIP services based on Jajah, acquired last year; and Skype continuing to flex its muscles with erstwhile new entrant allies, this time Nimbuzz. In our view, both moves are symptomatic of mVOIP becoming mainstream, and an increasing focus for mobile network operators. Premium readers see here for our thoughts.
Avanti’s PR goes into overdrive
Avanti Communications has released an RNS this morning entitled ‘launch success’ which, to the casual observer, might suggest that Avanti’s HYLAS1 satellite has been successfully launched. However, that is not the case; the release refers to Arianespace’s latest satellite launch, which is the one before HYLAS1 (due 25thNovember), and therefore completely unrelated. Failure of the latest Arianespace launch would definitely have merited an RNS, but not its success, which was the 39th consecutive successful launch and the reason why Avanti delayed its launch and spent more money to go with Arianespace. At best, hype, at worst, misleading PR.
