Smartphones and mobile data; where are the smart returns?
The mobile sub-sector has seen strong corporate and investor interest in the last year, with a strong one-year share price outperformance (up 81% against 6% for the FTSE All Share) and, since the start of 2011, significant IPO, secondary and private equity fund raising as well as a pick up in strategic M&A. The fact that nearly all of the mobile-related shares have been marked up so strongly suggests that the market is applying a ‘smartphone/mobile data’ upgrade; yet not all companies will be beneficiaries. In the Megabuyte Mobile Services annual review, which is sponsored by Goldenhill Technology Advisers, in addition to a review of share price performance, valuations and corporate activity in this part of the market over the last year, we examine the smartphone/mobile data effect and the potential for UK-based mobile-related companies to make a return in a world dominated by large players.
